What makes shea and cocoa butter soap special?
Shea butter and cocoa butter are the two great conditioning butters of soap making. Both are solid at room temperature and rich in the fatty acids that give a bar its hardness and a silky, cushioned lather. Shea butter, pressed from the nut of the African shea tree, is prized for its softening feel, while cocoa butter, from the cocoa bean, adds firmness and a faint natural chocolate aroma. Used together in a cold process recipe, they create a bar that feels genuinely luxurious in the hand and on the skin.
On their own, butters make a soap that is hard but low in lather, so this recipe balances them carefully. Olive oil brings mildness and a gentle, conditioning quality. Coconut oil provides cleansing power and big, fluffy bubbles. Castor oil, even at just five percent, transforms the lather into something rich, creamy and stable. The result is a bar that lathers beautifully, lasts a long time, and leaves the skin feeling soft rather than tight.

What is saponification?
Saponification is the chemical reaction at the heart of every real soap. When oils and butters, which are triglycerides, are mixed with sodium hydroxide dissolved in water, the two react to form soap and glycerin. The important safety point is that the sodium hydroxide is used up in the reaction. A correctly made, fully cured bar contains no free lye, which is exactly why finished soap is safe and gentle to use on the skin. Understanding this also explains why measuring matters so much: too little lye leaves a soft, oily bar, while too much leaves a harsh, lye heavy one.
A safety word before you start
Cold process soap is made with sodium hydroxide, also known as lye or caustic soda. It is a corrosive alkali that can cause serious chemical burns and permanent eye damage before it is saponified, so it deserves real respect. Treat it as a hazardous substance and follow the Health and Safety Executive guidance on the control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH), along with the safety data sheet supplied with your lye. The essential rules are simple and non negotiable:
- Wear personal protective equipment. Safety goggles, chemical resistant gloves and long sleeves at all times when handling lye or raw soap.
- Work in a well ventilated space, away from children and pets, with windows open or extraction running.
- Always add lye to water, never water to lye. Adding water to lye can erupt violently. Makers remember it as snow floats on water, so you sprinkle the lye onto the water.
- Keep white vinegar nearby to neutralise surface spills, and rinse any skin contact with plenty of cool running water.
- Use dedicated soaping equipment that never touches food again, and label it clearly.
This level of care is only needed at the raw lye stage. Once your soap has saponified and cured, it is simply soap, mild and safe to use.
Equipment you will need
- A digital scale accurate to one gram, for weighing every ingredient
- A stick blender (immersion blender) to reach trace quickly
- Two heatproof jugs, one for the lye solution and one for the oils
- A stainless steel or heavy plastic mixing bowl, never aluminium, which reacts dangerously with lye
- A silicone spatula and a digital thermometer
- A silicone loaf mould or individual cavity moulds
- Safety goggles, chemical resistant gloves and an apron
Avoid aluminium and non stick coatings entirely, as lye corrodes aluminium and can release hydrogen gas. Stainless steel, silicone and heavy duty plastic are the safe choices, and keeping a dedicated set of soaping tools makes every batch cleaner and safer.
The shea and cocoa butter formulation
This makes roughly 1.3 kilograms of soap, enough for a standard loaf mould. Everything is given by weight, because soap making is chemistry and volume measurements are simply not accurate enough for a safe, repeatable bar.

Superfat. This recipe uses a six percent superfat, which means six percent of the oils are left unsaponified to condition the skin and to give a safety margin against any excess lye. It is a comfortable level for a moisturising, butter rich bar.
Verify before you make it. Saponification values vary slightly between suppliers and even between batches of the same oil, so always run your exact recipe through a reputable lye calculator before mixing. This single step is what protects you from an unsafe, lye heavy bar, and it takes only a minute.
Balance the coconut. Coconut oil is wonderfully cleansing but can be drying if overused, so keeping it at thirty percent with a generous superfat gives you a bar that cleans well without leaving skin tight.
Watch the trace. Butter heavy recipes can move to a thicker trace quickly once the hard fats begin to cool, so soap at a moderate temperature and be ready to pour promptly.
Fragrance and allergens. Fragrance oils and essential oils carry restricted allergens, such as linalool and limonene, that must be declared on the label above set thresholds. Before you sell, an allergen compliance check confirms exactly what has to appear on your ingredient list.
How to make it, step by step
Set aside about ninety minutes for the active work, then a day or two of patience before unmoulding.
1. Prepare and weigh
Put on your goggles and gloves, clear your workspace, keep children and pets out of the room, and weigh every ingredient before you begin. Working with everything measured and to hand keeps the process calm and safe.
2. Make the lye solution
Weigh the distilled water and the sodium hydroxide into separate containers. Working near ventilation, slowly sprinkle the lye into the water while stirring gently. It will heat rapidly to around eighty degrees Celsius and give off fumes for a minute or two, so do not lean over it. Stir until the solution is clear, then set it aside somewhere safe to cool.
3. Melt the hard oils
Gently melt the coconut oil, shea butter and cocoa butter together until just liquid, taking care not to overheat them. Then stir in the liquid olive and castor oils, which will bring the whole oil blend down towards soaping temperature.
4. Combine at the right temperature
Let both the lye solution and the oils come to a similar temperature, ideally between thirty five and forty five degrees Celsius. When they are ready, pour the lye solution slowly into the oils, holding the stick blender in the pot to guide the flow and avoid splashing.
5. Blend to trace
Pulse the stick blender in short bursts, alternating with stirring, until you reach a light trace, the point at which a drizzle of batter across the surface leaves a faint, fading trail. Stop at light trace so you have time to work.
6. Add fragrance, mould and insulate
Blend in your fragrance at light trace, then pour the batter into the mould, tap it firmly to release air bubbles, cover it, and wrap it in a towel overnight to encourage an even gel phase and a smooth, translucent bar.
7. Unmould and cut
Unmould after one to two days, once the soap is firm enough to hold its shape cleanly, and cut it into bars while wearing gloves, as the soap is still alkaline at this early stage.
Curing your soap
Cure the bars for four to six weeks on a rack in a cool, dry, airy place, turning them occasionally so every side dries evenly. During the cure, saponification finishes and the bar becomes completely mild, while water evaporates so the bar hardens and lasts longer. A patient cure is the difference between a good bar and a great one.
Testing your soap
Two simple checks confirm your bar is safe and ready to use.
- The zap test. Touch a well cured bar briefly to the tip of your tongue. Soap tastes of soap. A sharp, battery like zap means there is unreacted lye, so the bar needs a longer cure or has a recipe error. Only zap test a bar that has cured for several weeks.
- pH. Handmade soap is naturally alkaline, usually around pH nine to ten, which is completely normal for a soap. Check with pH strips on a wet lather. A reading well above this range suggests a lye heavy batch, so recheck your measurements before selling it.
Storing and using your soap
Once cured, keep your bars somewhere cool, dry and out of direct sunlight, ideally loosely wrapped or boxed so they stay clean and firm rather than gathering dust or softening. In the shower or by the sink, a well drained soap dish that lets the bar dry fully between uses will make it last far longer, because a bar left sitting in a puddle of water softens and dissolves quickly.
Handmade soap is at its best within about a year of its cure date, although a well made, well stored bar will happily keep for longer than that. If you sell your soap, remember that its shelf life, storage conditions and the period after opening all form part of the information a safety assessment reviews, so it is worth keeping a clear note of every batch date from the start.
Labelling your soap for sale
Selling your soap means labelling it correctly, and the requirements are specific. Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and the UK cosmetic rules, a cosmetic label must carry the name and function of the product, the name and address of the Responsible Person, the country of origin where required, the nominal weight at the time of packaging, a batch number, the period after opening or a minimum durability date, any mandatory warnings, and a full ingredient list. That list must use INCI names in descending order of weight, and for a cold process soap the oils appear in their saponified form, so olive oil is listed as Sodium Olivate, coconut oil as Sodium Cocoate, shea butter as Sodium Shea Butterate, and so on, alongside water (Aqua), the naturally produced glycerin, and any fragrance allergens that sit above their declaration thresholds.
The ingredient list, the allergen declarations and the mandatory warnings are the three places small brands most often slip up, so it is well worth having a label and packaging review before you commit to a print run. A correct, professional label keeps you compliant, saves you from costly reprints, and builds real trust with the customers who take the time to read it.
Troubleshooting common problems
- A soft or greasy bar. Too much butter or too high a superfat can leave a soft bar. Keep to the percentages above and give it a full cure.
- Cracking on top. The soap overheated in the mould. Soap at a cooler temperature and do not over insulate a butter rich batch.
- White soda ash. A harmless, powdery film that is purely cosmetic. Prevent it by covering the soap during cure, or steam or plane it off the finished bar.
- Orange spots. These dreaded orange spots are rancidity. Use fresh oils, store bars dry, and a little rosemary oleoresin extract acts as a natural antioxidant.
Variations to build a range
- Chocolate orange bar. Add a little cocoa powder and sweet orange essential oil for a warm, seasonal favourite.
- Whipped shea top. Reserve a little batter, whip it to soft peaks, and pipe a decorative top for a premium look.
- Coffee scrub bar. Stir in fine coffee grounds at trace for gentle exfoliation and a kitchen friendly bar.
- Extra conditioning. Nudge the shea up and the coconut down slightly for an even gentler bar aimed at dry skin.
From kitchen to shelf: selling your soap legally
Handmade soap is a cosmetic, so the moment you sell it, it must meet UK and EU cosmetic law before it goes on the market. Here is what compliance involves.
- A Cosmetic Product Safety Report. Every cosmetic sold in the UK or EU needs a Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR), a formal safety assessment signed by a qualified Safety Assessor under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
