Some of the most beloved essential oils bright, fresh citrus scents carry a hidden hazard: phototoxicity. Applied to skin that then meets sunlight, certain oils can cause burns, blistering and lasting dark patches. It is one of the most important safety issues for natural makers to understand. This guide explains which oils are phototoxic, why, and how to use them safely or avoid the problem.

What is phototoxicity?

Phototoxicity (sometimes called a phototoxic or photosensitising reaction) happens when a substance on the skin reacts with ultraviolet light from the sun, producing damage that neither the substance nor the light would cause alone. With phototoxic essential oils, certain compounds absorb UV and trigger a reaction in the skin that can range from an exaggerated sunburn to blistering and, often, persistent brown pigmentation that can last for months.

It is not an allergy it does not require prior sensitisation and it can affect anyone who applies enough of a phototoxic oil and then exposes that skin to sunlight. This makes it a dose-and-exposure issue: the more phototoxic material on the skin and the more UV it meets, the worse the potential reaction. That predictability is also what makes it manageable, if you respect the limits.

Which essential oils are phototoxic?

The main culprits are cold-pressed (expressed) citrus oils, especially bergamot, along with cold-pressed lemon, lime, bitter orange and grapefruit, and a few non-citrus oils such as certain types of angelica and cumin. The phototoxicity comes from naturally occurring compounds called furocoumarins (such as bergapten) present in these oils bergamot is particularly high in them, which is why it is the most famous example.

Importantly, not every version of these oils is equally risky. Steam-distilled citrus oils generally contain far fewer furocoumarins than cold-pressed ones, and so are much less phototoxic. The extraction method and the specific oil both matter, which is why knowing exactly what you are buying not just “lemon oil” but its type and source is important.

Why leave-on products are the concern

Phototoxicity is overwhelmingly a concern for leave-on products applied to skin that will be exposed to daylight face creams, body lotions, balms, perfumes and the like. The product stays on the skin, the phototoxic compounds remain in contact, and then the skin meets the sun. A facial oil with too much bergamot, worn out in daylight, is a textbook phototoxicity risk.

Rinse-off products are far less of a concern, because the oil is washed away rather than left on the skin to react with UV. This is why the limits for phototoxic oils are much stricter in leave-on products than rinse-off ones, and why the product type is central to assessing the risk. A bergamot soap is a very different proposition from a bergamot body lotion.

The limits for phototoxic oils

Because of the risk, phototoxic oils have strict maximum levels in leave-on products, set by IFRA standards based on their furocoumarin content. These limits can be very low a small fraction of a percent for the most phototoxic oils in leave-on use. The aim is to keep the amount of phototoxic compound on the skin below the level that causes a reaction under normal sun exposure.

FCF (furocoumarin-free) oils

A practical solution for makers who love citrus scents is to use furocoumarin-free (FCF) versions of phototoxic oils. FCF bergamot, for example, has had the phototoxic furocoumarins removed, so it delivers much of the scent without the phototoxic risk, allowing higher use levels in leave-on products. FCF and steam-distilled options make it possible to enjoy citrus notes more safely.

Choosing an FCF or steam-distilled version is often the simplest way to sidestep phototoxicity concerns while keeping the scent you want. When you buy, it is worth checking explicitly whether an oil is cold-pressed (potentially phototoxic) or FCF/steam-distilled (lower risk), because the name alone does not always tell you. The assessment will treat them very differently.

Warnings and consumer guidance

Where a product contains phototoxic materials at levels that warrant it, warnings advising users to avoid sun exposure after application may be needed, and the safety assessment identifies these. More fundamentally, though, the goal is to keep phototoxic content within safe limits in the first place, so the product is safe under normal use rather than relying on the user to avoid the sun.

Beyond citrus: timing and other reactive oils

While cold-pressed citrus oils are the headline phototoxic risk, a few non-citrus oils also carry phototoxic or photosensitising potential certain types of angelica root, cumin, and some others contain furocoumarins or related compounds. They are less commonly used, but a maker reaching for an unusual oil should check its phototoxic status rather than assume only citrus is a concern. The safe habit is to verify any new oil's profile before building it into a leave-on product.

It is also worth understanding that a phototoxic reaction is not always immediate or obvious. The skin may be fine at the moment of application, with the reaction developing only after sun exposure, sometimes hours later, and the resulting pigmentation can appear in odd streaks or shapes that mirror where the product was applied or dripped. Because the cause and effect are separated in time, users may not connect the reaction to the product, which is one reason keeping phototoxic content safely low matters so much.

This delayed, sometimes lasting nature is what makes phototoxicity more than a passing irritation: pigmentation from a serious phototoxic reaction can persist for months. For makers, the takeaway is that phototoxicity deserves to be designed out through safe levels and sensible oil choices, not managed after the fact. A product that quietly stays within limits protects users who will never think to avoid the sun after applying their moisturiser.

Storage, freshness and oxidation

Phototoxicity is not the only sun-and-citrus concern oxidation matters too. Citrus and other terpene-rich oils oxidise over time when exposed to air, light and heat, and oxidised oils become more sensitising than fresh ones. An oil that was reasonably gentle when new can become a more potent allergen as it degrades, which is why old, poorly stored oils are a hidden risk in a maker's cupboard.

The practical response is good housekeeping: buy oils in sensible quantities, store them cool, dark and well-sealed, note their shelf life, and do not use oils long past their best. Antioxidants can help slow oxidation in a finished product. The safety assessment assumes you are using sound, fresh materials, so keeping your oils in good condition is part of making the assessed product the one customers actually receive.
