Quick answer
An Amazon Canada SDS is a bilingual English and French safety data sheet, set out in 16 sections under WHMIS and the Hazardous Products Regulations (SOR/2015-17), that Amazon.ca asks for when it flags an ASIN as possible dangerous goods. It must name a Canadian manufacturer or importer. It costs from £45, with a 24-hour Priority Delivery option.
What's included in your Amazon Canada SDS
| Document | What it is |
|---|---|
| WHMIS hazard classification | WHMIS hazard classes and categories, with the label elements required by the Hazardous Products Regulations as amended in 2022 |
| English and French text | One bilingual sheet, or two matching unilingual versions supplied together |
| Schedule 1 section layout | The 16 headings and information elements required by Schedule 1 to the HPR |
| Initial supplier identifier | Section 1 completed with the Canadian manufacturer or importer you name |
| PDF matched to Amazon.ca | Product name and brand aligned with your Amazon.ca detail page, ready to upload |
Who this Amazon Canada SDS is for
- Sellers with an Amazon.ca listing inactive pending hazmat review
- US sellers adding Amazon.ca with an English-only OSHA sheet
- UK and EU brands entering Canada through a Canadian importer
- FBA sellers with shipments to Canadian fulfilment centres on hold
- Sellers whose SDS predates the December 2022 HPR amendments
What this Amazon Canada SDS does not include
- A say in Amazon.ca's ruling: its dangerous goods team classifies the ASIN and sets any storage or FBA limits. We answer for the accuracy of the bilingual SDS.
- Importer of record services: the SDS names a Canadian manufacturer or importer; we do not take on that role.
- The US version: Amazon.com needs an OSHA HazCom sheet — see Amazon USA SDS.
- Testing and TDG certification: laboratory flash point measurements, lithium battery test summaries and Transportation of Dangerous Goods training sit outside this service.
- Health Canada cosmetic duties: cosmetics sold in Canada must be notified to Health Canada under the Cosmetic Regulations, a filing this service does not include.
How it works
- Fill our Product Information Document Provide the formula, supplier SDSs, the Amazon.ca ASINs and your Canadian importer's name, address and phone number.
- WHMIS classification We classify the product against the Hazardous Products Regulations, aligned with GHS Revision 7 and parts of Revision 8.
- English and French drafting We complete the Schedule 1 sections in both official languages and deliver within 72, 48 or 24 hours.
- Amazon.ca upload You upload the bilingual PDF against each flagged ASIN; Amazon.ca reviews it and classifies the product.
What is an Amazon Canada SDS?
An Amazon Canada SDS is a Canadian safety data sheet built around WHMIS — Canada's Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, set out in the Hazardous Products Act and the Hazardous Products Regulations (SOR/2015-17) — for upload when Amazon.ca places a product in dangerous goods (hazmat) review. Health Canada administers these supplier rules.
Two requirements set a Canadian sheet apart from a US one. Every information element must be in both English and French, and Section 1 must identify the Canadian manufacturer or Canadian importer rather than a foreign supplier. An English-only OSHA sheet from your Amazon.com listing meets neither, so we prepare a WHMIS version for Amazon.ca.
What Amazon.ca's review involves and what WHMIS adds
Products Amazon.ca often reviews:
- Fragrances and sprays — eau de parfum, body mists and room sprays containing alcohol.
- Pressurised and solvent products — aerosols, nail polish, nail polish remover and essential oils.
- Listings with hazard-like wording — attribute or keyword matches can prompt a review of a harmless product.
What to send Amazon.ca:
- A document for each flagged ASIN — either a full SDS or, for products free of hazardous chemicals, Amazon's own exemption sheet.
- Names that match the Amazon.ca listing — trade name and brand as shown on the detail page.
- A sheet built for Canada — an English-only or US-supplier SDS may be queried.
After the review:
Amazon.ca either releases the ASIN as non-dangerous or assigns a dangerous goods status that may restrict how it is stored and fulfilled in Canada. A classification you disagree with can be disputed in Seller Central.
What WHMIS requires on the sheet:
- Both official languages — one bilingual SDS or two unilingual documents supplied together.
- Initial supplier identifier — the name, address and telephone number of the Canadian manufacturer or Canadian importer.
- Current HPR rules — amendments in force from 15 December 2022 align WHMIS with GHS Revision 7 and parts of Revision 8. The transition ended on 14 December 2025, and Health Canada is focusing on compliance promotion until 19 July 2027.
- Updates within 90 days — a supplier must update the SDS within 90 days of becoming aware of significant new data. The three-year expiry used under WHMIS 1988 no longer applies.
Cosmetics and WHMIS:
Cosmetics as defined in the Food and Drugs Act, and consumer products, are excluded from WHMIS supplier requirements. For a cosmetic, a WHMIS SDS is a marketplace or carrier request rather than a legal duty — yet Amazon.ca may insist on one during review, and a misleading sheet would still be a problem.
What we need from you
- Formula with percentages — every ingredient, with CAS numbers where you have them.
- Supplier SDSs for each raw material.
- Amazon.ca listing details — the brand and product title as they appear on Amazon.ca, and the ASINs flagged.
- Canadian importer or manufacturer — legal name, address and telephone number for the initial supplier identifier.
- Packaging and test data — bottle or can size, propellant if any, and existing flash point data.
Legal framework
- Hazardous Products Act and Hazardous Products Regulations (SOR/2015-17) — the supplier side of WHMIS, administered by Health Canada; Schedule 1 sets the SDS headings and information elements.
- HPR amendments in force 15 December 2022 — align with GHS Revision 7 and certain provisions of Revision 8; the transition period ended on 14 December 2025.
- Official languages — SDS information must be provided in English and French.
- Exclusions — cosmetics, drugs, food and consumer products are excluded from WHMIS supplier requirements, although Amazon.ca may still request a sheet from cosmetic sellers.
An Amazon Canada SDS meets Amazon.ca's request in the WHMIS format. It does not replace Health Canada cosmetic notification or Transportation of Dangerous Goods compliance.

Send Amazon.ca a WHMIS sheet in both official languages. Select your delivery option, or message us on WhatsApp on +44 7346 009332 if you are unsure who your Canadian importer should be.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Amazon.ca asking for an SDS?
Amazon.ca has put the ASIN into dangerous goods (hazmat) review. Until it receives an SDS or exemption sheet, it cannot decide whether the listing can go live or whether Canadian fulfilment centres will take the stock.
Which law does an Amazon Canada SDS follow?
WHMIS, under the Hazardous Products Act and the Hazardous Products Regulations (SOR/2015-17), as amended from 15 December 2022 to align with GHS Revision 7.
Does a Canadian SDS have to be in French?
Yes. WHMIS requires every SDS information element in English and French, on one bilingual sheet or two unilingual versions. Both languages are part of our Amazon Canada SDS.
Can I reuse my US OSHA SDS on Amazon.ca?
Not as it stands. It is usually English-only and names a US supplier, while WHMIS requires French and a Canadian manufacturer or importer in Section 1.
Whose details go in Section 1?
The initial supplier identifier: the name, address and telephone number of the Canadian manufacturer or Canadian importer. Tell us who imports your product into Canada.
Do cosmetics need a WHMIS SDS?
Not by law. Cosmetics and consumer products are excluded from WHMIS supplier requirements. Amazon.ca can still ask for an SDS during a hazmat review, which is when this service applies.
Can you guarantee Amazon.ca will approve my ASIN?
No. Amazon.ca makes the classification decision. We guarantee the SDS itself regulator-ready, or we revise it free.
How much does an Amazon Canada SDS cost?
£45 with Standard Delivery (72 hours), £75 with Fast Delivery (48 hours) or £100 with Priority Delivery (24 hours).
