Quick answer

An Amazon USA SDS is a safety data sheet in the 16-section format of the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200, that Amazon.com requests once its hazmat team flags an ASIN. We write it in English to the 2024 HazCom update; prices begin at £45, and Priority Delivery takes 24 hours.

Who this Amazon USA SDS is for

  • Sellers whose Amazon.com ASIN is stuck in dangerous goods review
  • FBA sellers with US inbound shipments held pending a hazmat decision
  • UK and EU brands launching on Amazon.com with a REACH-format SDS
  • Sellers relying on an old MSDS or a supplier's generic sheet
  • Body spray, nail, aerosol and cleaning product brands in the US

What this Amazon USA SDS does not include

  • Control over Amazon's ruling: Amazon.com classifies the ASIN and decides whether it joins the FBA dangerous goods programme, ships merchant-fulfilled or cannot be sold. We stand behind the SDS, not the ruling.
  • The Canadian version: Amazon.ca needs a bilingual WHMIS sheet naming a Canadian supplier — see Amazon Canada SDS.
  • Testing and shipping certification: we do not run flash point tests, issue UN 38.3 battery summaries or provide DOT hazmat shipper training.
  • FDA cosmetic duties: facility registration and product listing under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA) are separate obligations.
  • US distribution outside Amazon: for distributors and workplace customers, see hazardous SDS for USA, Canada and Australia or non-hazardous SDS.

How it works

  1. Fill our Product Information Document Share the full formula, raw-material SDSs, the Amazon.com ASINs and how the product is packed.
  2. HazCom hazard determination We evaluate health and physical hazards using the criteria in Appendices A and B to 29 CFR 1910.1200.
  3. SDS drafting We write the 16 Appendix D sections in English and send the PDF within your chosen 72, 48 or 24 hours.
  4. Seller Central upload You attach the SDS to every flagged ASIN, parent and child, and Amazon.com issues its classification.

What is an Amazon USA SDS?

An Amazon USA SDS is an American-format safety data sheet that follows the US OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom, 29 CFR 1910.1200), used to answer Amazon.com's dangerous goods (hazmat) review in Seller Central. While the review is open, the listing may be suppressed and FBA inbound shipments refused.

A US sheet differs from a UK or EU one in ways a reviewer notices: OSHA sets its own hazard criteria, requires English and fixes the 16 headings in Appendix D. OSHA also revised the standard in 2024 to align primarily with GHS Revision 7, so we write new sheets to the updated rule rather than the 2012 version.

How Amazon.com's dangerous goods review works

Typical triggers on Amazon.com:

  • Flammable or pressurised products — perfumes and body sprays, aerosols, nail polish and remover, essential oils.
  • Corrosive products — some cleaners, drain treatments and hair relaxers.
  • Keyword or attribute matches — Amazon's systems can flag an ASIN on listing wording alone.

Documents Amazon.com asks for:

  • An SDS or exemption sheet per ASIN — variations can be flagged individually.
  • A GHS-format SDS — legacy MSDS documents written before HazCom 2012 do not follow the 16-section layout.
  • Matching identity — product name, brand and manufacturer that agree with the detail page.

Possible results:

Amazon.com either marks the ASIN non-dangerous or records it as dangerous goods (hazmat). A dangerous goods ASIN may be sold only through the FBA dangerous goods programme, fulfilled by the merchant, or not at all. Sellers can dispute a classification they believe is wrong.

HazCom 2024 — the dates that matter:

  • Published 20 May 2024, effective 19 July 2024 — aligned primarily with GHS Revision 7.
  • Four-month extension — published on 15 January 2026, moving the manufacturer and importer deadlines.
  • Substances — updated SDSs due by 19 May 2026.
  • Mixtures — most cosmetics and consumer products are mixtures, with updated SDSs due by 19 November 2027.

Cosmetics and HazCom:

Under 29 CFR 1910.1200(b)(6)(viii), cosmetics packaged for sale to consumers in a retail establishment are outside the standard. For a retail cosmetic, an SDS is therefore a marketplace or carrier requirement rather than an OSHA one — and Amazon.com may still make it a condition of selling, so the content has to be right.

What we need from you

  • Formula breakdown — each component's CAS number where known, with its concentration or range.
  • Raw-material SDSs from your suppliers.
  • Amazon.com listing data — product name, brand and every flagged ASIN, including child variations.
  • Responsible party — the manufacturer, importer or distributor name, address and telephone number for Section 1.
  • Packaging and data — fill size, whether it is pressurised, and any flash point or pH readings.

Legal framework

  • OSHA HazCom, 29 CFR 1910.1200(g) — chemical manufacturers and importers must obtain or develop an SDS for each hazardous chemical, in English, with the content set out in Appendix D.
  • Appendices A and B — the health and physical hazard classification criteria.
  • 2024 final rule — published 20 May 2024 and effective 19 July 2024; compliance dates extended by four months in January 2026 (substances 19 May 2026, mixtures 19 November 2027).
  • Paragraph (b)(6)(viii) — cosmetics packaged for sale to consumers in a retail establishment are exempt from the standard.

An Amazon USA SDS answers Amazon.com's request in the OSHA format. It does not cover FDA cosmetic obligations under MoCRA or DOT hazardous materials shipping rules.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Amazon.com asking for an SDS?

Its hazmat team has flagged the ASIN as possible dangerous goods. The listing and FBA inbound stay on hold until you upload an SDS or exemption sheet and Amazon classifies the product.

What format does an Amazon USA SDS need?

The OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200: 16 sections with the headings set in Appendix D, written in English.

What changed in OSHA's 2024 HazCom update?

OSHA aligned the standard primarily with GHS Revision 7. After a four-month extension, SDSs for mixtures which covers most cosmetics and consumer products must meet the new rule by 19 November 2027.

Can I use a UK or EU SDS on Amazon.com?

Not reliably. A REACH sheet uses EU classification wording, EU regulatory references and EU contacts. Amazon.com reviewers expect an OSHA HazCom sheet.

Do cosmetics legally need an SDS in the US?

Not under OSHA when packaged for sale to consumers in a retail establishment. Amazon.com can still require one during dangerous goods review, which is what this service covers.

Is Amazon approval guaranteed with your SDS?

No. The classification is Amazon.com's call. Our promise is limited to the SDS: regulator-ready or we revise it free.

How quickly can I get an Amazon USA SDS?

Within 72 hours for £45, 48 hours for £75 or 24 hours for £100, with the clock starting once we hold all the information we need.
